September 2010 People Smarts: It’s All about TRUST

An on-line newsletter from Ellen Castro

Change is the norm. To lead through change, keep it simple. Build trust by:

  • Being sincere.
  • Communicating. Being accessible. Seeking people out.
  • LISTENING. Feelings are appropriate. People cannot hear information till they deal with the emotions. By expressing feelings, people can move through anxiety and resistance to exploration and solutions. Reality check – anxious people are poor performers at best.
  • Not taking things personally. Different people react differently to the same situation. All reactions are legitimate. People are preoccupied with their security and identity. It is not about you. Work through your own “stuff” to be effective. Accept what is with a smile.
  • Creating conditions for success. Paint a compelling vision. What’s in it for them? Be a good finder. Re-focus energies by setting priorities. Engage others to take ownership for the change by involving them. Provide the required resources. Encourage creative problem solving and teamwork. Celebrate small wins.

Change – crisis or opportunity for your followers? You are far more influential than you think.

NOTHING beats the capability of the human heart engaged.
